“Darrel, did you see that?” Emilia turned to her fiancé, wide-eyed. “Isn’t that the girl Grace has been training at the shop? Cordelia?”

“Yes… what of it?”

Emilia frowned. Darrel was being evasive. How could he just watch what they watched without blinking an eye?

“But… isn’t she in trouble? What did she even do to anger L Faba anyway? I know L Faba… she’s not cruel…” Emilia thought out loud.

Darrel sighed. “It doesn’t matter. Best we don’t get involved in the sages’ affairs.”

They watched a young elf approach the mischief sage.

“I hope you like the candy I picked… wait. Where did Cordie go?” He stopped in his tracks, looking confused.

“I’m not sure,” L Faba turned to him. “She just left… Morgyn was around earlier. Perhaps she went to pester them.”

“Oh.” The elf’s face fell. “Yeah, she did make a big deal out of seeing Morgyn earlier, I guess.”

“That must be it, then.” L Faba agreed. “But you know, what, Dandy…”

Instead of finishing her sentence, she stuck her tongue out and made a silly face, prompting him to laugh.

“I’ve missed you, Lulu,” he said finally once he managed to composed himself.

“Yeah… I’ve missed you, too, Dandy.” L Faba looked into his eyes, her expression soft all of the sudden. “So tell me, what kinds of candy were there?”

“Oh, so many! I’ve gotten loads!” The elf’s face lit up as he gestured wildly.

“This is not right,” Emilia frowned. “She just flat out lied to him!”

“She’s the sage of mischief, my love.” Darrel reminded her softly. “Isn’t that what she does?”

“I suppose… but still… this looked different.” Emilia sighed. “You’ve grown up in this world, I know. But I’ve gotten to know all the sages in my short time here, and… well I don’t know what it is, exactly, but this doesn’t seem like a regular mischief trick.”

“You’re thinking into it too much.”

They quickly stopped amidst conversation as the mischief sage and her companion passed them. It appeared L Faba suggested they play a game of horseshoes, and the young elf followed.

“Ok, well now that they’re gone, I think I’ll go check on her.” Emilia informed her Darrel.

“What? I just told you, we shouldn’t meddle with the sages’ business. That’s not how the Charm family got to be so successful in the spellcaster ranks for so many generations…”

“I’m not meddling,” Emilia shrugged. “L Faba’s affairs are clearly over by the horseshoes at the minute, don’t you think?”

Before Darrel could stop her, she stood up and ran off, looking for that silly human girl.

***

Emilia finally spotted the girl by the portal leading to Casters’ Alley. Except, in her dazed state, she wasn’t sure if she was even going to make it for the portal. Emilia sprinted after her, in case the girl missed and plunged herself into the abyss.

“Cordelia! Hey! Wait!” The young spellcaster yelled at the human.

The girl did stop, but it took one look into her face for Emilia to figure she was not really there.

She tried shaking her, but Emilia didn’t really have much actual body strength. And none of the spells she’d learned so far were particularly helpful.

“Dang it… how do I make you snap out of it?” She frowned at Cordelia’s dazed face.

“Decursify!” Her fiancé’s unmistakeable deep voice reached her. Emilia’s face lit up. She saw Darrel sprinting towards them. He didn’t even get his wand out, raw magic bursting right out of the palm of his hand.

For a brief moment, Emilia was reminded of the time they met, and how the spellcaster swept her off her feet instantly… focus, she reminded herself.

She watched Cordelia come back to her senses.

“Wha- where am I?” The girl looked at each of them, confused. “I… Darrel? Uh, hi. Emilia? What happened?”

“You wandered off,” Darrel told her. Emilia looked at him quizzically. He wasn’t lying, per say, but surely there was more to it than that… Still, she decided she was done interfering in things that went far over her head that night.

“Right.” Cordelia’s brows furrowed. “Um, which way is the fair?”

“Up that way,” Darren gestured up the road. “You might want to take a breather for a bit, though. Anyway… I’ll see you at the shop.”

He headed up himself, with Emilia in tow.

“That was pretty chivalrous, what you did,” she gave him a shy smile.

Darrel’s chest inflated. “Oh, well… don’t mention it.”

“No really!” Emilia wasn’t done. “You were like a superhero or something!”

He cupped reached out to her, cupping her face in the palms of his hands gently. “Oh, Emmie… you’re the one who always keeps me right, who always wants to do the right thing…. If I was a superhero over there, it’s only because you’ve made me one.”

***

Cordelia slowly made her way up to the fair. She wasn’t sure what had happened, exactly, but she knew that it was L Faba’s doing. What did mischief sage do to her?

As she neared the roller-skating rink, her eyes rested on no other but L Faba herself. Even worse, she was talking to Morgyn. Just her luck…

Much like with that young girl she saw Morgyn with earlier, Cordelia couldn’t tell what they were talking about. It was pretty obvious to anyone watching that L Faba was rather pleased with herself, though.

Cordelia watched the mischief sage leave with a gloating smile on her face. What was that about?

And was Morgyn… annoyed? Or was that just Cordelia’s imagination? For a split second, she allowed herself to picture that the two sages had been arguing about her, with Morgyn defending her honour… or something like that. Cordelia didn’t quite have time to flesh the fantasy out. She realised Morgyn had noticed her.

But instead of speaking to her, Morgyn just proceeded onto the roller-skating rink. Roller-skates appeared on their feet somehow – probably another spell. The untamed magic sage gave her a subtle nod, got into a position, and started a skating routine of sorts.

Of course bloody Morgyn was practically a professional skater, she thought to herself bitterly. Was there anything they couldn’t do?

Her eyes followed Morgyn as they twirled away, to the far end of the skating ring, and then off it completely. They gave her a hint of a bow, as if thanking the audience. She shook her head. Was Morgyn toying with her again?

“Cordie! Finally found you… where have you been all this time?” Dandelion’s voice brought her back to reality.

She looked at her friend, remembering how pleased he was to reconnect with L Faba again. She couldn’t bear tell him what had happened. She put on her best smile, hopping she’d become a somewhat more convincing liar through her escapades with the sages.

“Hey, Dandy… you were right, the fair is pretty amazing. I just got distracted… I mean, did you see that huge jack-o-lantern?” There had to be a huge jack-o-lantern, didn’t there?

“Oh yeah! It’s pretty awesome, isn’t it?” Dandelion beamed at her, before growing more serious again. “Though I wish you we saw it at the same time. We were supposed to do this fair thing together, remember?”

“Well… did you have fun, though?” She asked weakly.

The corners of his mouth rose upwards. “I did. Did you see the bonfire? And the chocolate fountain?”

“Uh… why don’t you tell me about them?” Cordelia suggested. She only half listened as her friend launched into a lengthy description. She couldn’t wait to get back to her little camp.

I think you mean sage, here. =)

I wonder what would happen if a sim falls into the abyss around the magic realm. I mean, it’s bound to have happened at least a handful of times. Do they keep falling forever? Does it teleport them back onto the street? Do they disintegrate? Will a grumbly witch on a mop or vacuum cleaner come pluck them out of the sky?

I like Emilia. She keeps looking out for Cordelia and helping out people where she can. We need more people like that. ❤

Did… did Faba just brag about hexing a defenseless human? Psch. Stupid sage. I’m starting to dislike her almost as much as Morgyn… almost. This is becoming a pattern with sages, isn’t it? xD

I feel bad for Cordelia, though it's noble that she's still trying to protect Dandy's feelings. Now it seems like she ditched him, while that wasn't the case at all. Gah. *frustration because stupid magic and stupid sages not minding their business* xD

    1. Haha yes, thank you! I do try to proofread these, but honestly I see what I want 😄

Hm, good question! Judging by the look of those houses in the magic realm that are all just hanging by a thread to keep them from drifting away, I feel like you’d just keep floating forever. But who knows. Hopefully Cordelia never finds out!

Emilia has a good heart. Someone has to, lol!

Haha yes you don’t seem to be a fan of the sages 😆 I love them, but I have to. They’re definitely not easy to like 😄

  2. I like the makeover you gave Emilia, it’s very fitting. I’m glad she came to Cordelia’s rescue, or rather influenced Darrell to get off his lazy butt and help out, lol.

Haha, of course, Morgyn would find yet another way to show off, lol.

I think there are some complicated reasons behind L Faba’s actions. I don’t really see her as good or evil, somewhere in between. I think she cares about Dandelion and maybe is protecting him? But she does it in a really crappy way. Or I could be misreading this, maybe she is really just using Dandelion. Anyway, I enjoy speculating about her motives. 🙂

    1. Yeah, I’ve changed Emilia a lot in spite of mostly leaving Darrel the same. It’s made me find a lot more appreciation for her, whereas before I will have completely ignored the Charms. Gemma looks entirely different, just you wait. And yeah I see Emilia as sweet, though perhaps not as naive as she might come across. I think she definitely knows what effect she has on Darrel haha!

Yeah, Morgyn does not do subtle 😆

L Faba is a complicated character. I think most people aren’t completely good or completely bad (ok, maybe apart from Dandelion haha), so I’m liking your theory about her.

      1. I can’t wait to see Gemma! You did a good job with Emilia. I don’t dig Emilia’s look in-game. Though, I do think Minerva looks really cool. She’s probably my favorite of the Glimmerbrook townies (excluding the sages). I also like your makeover of L Faba, I forgot to mention her, lol.

        1. I got L Faba from the gallery, someone managed to replicate the version of her from the trailer which is like a hundred bazillion times better than what you get in game. You’ll be happy to know I haven’t changed Minerva 😊

  3. Wait, no! I don’t understand! Why’d she let L Faba off the hook like that!? She should stand up for herself. I know she wants Dandy to reconnect with his friend but he should know what kind of friend he’s reconnecting with! Gahhh I disapprove of this. Watching Dandy have fun w L Faba at Cordelia’s expense is not fun at all! My gosh Darrel is a 180 guy huh? Completely different with Emilia around. He helped sure, but he didn’t have Cordelia’s best interests at heart so I’m justifying not putting as much weight on his actions 😝 ah man I am so unimpressed at LFaba now. Morgyn is just… lol.

    1. Haha I’m sorry! I suppose she’s tried to stand up for herself in the last chapter and it didn’t go down so well, she’s likely wary of antagonising L Faba even more now. But a lot of it boils down to Dandelion basically being her only friend; she doesn’t want to disappoint him, but there’s more to it than that – do you think that if she put Dandy in a position to choose between her and L Faba right now, Cordelia would be the one he’d pick?

Oh and yes, Cordelia’s wellbeing may not have been Darrel’s motivation there, exactly… But it’s the outcome that counts, right? 😆

      1. Ahh that’s an interesting perspective to take. So Cordelia is worried that when she accuses L Faba with her little evidence, Dandy will be forced to make a decision on their words alone and she’s not confident that he’ll choose her. Gotcha. Ooh that sucks when you can’t even trust the friendship you’ve built. Hope she doesn’t let that eat away at her.

I don’t know about that I’m a it’s the process that matters kind of person, but I do have a goal-oriented attitude. Just that I apply it on work, not people. >.> I refuse to be associated with Darrel in anyway! 😛

          1. Haha I know the feeling, the other day I left a comment on someone’s blog that contained what barely even resembled a word (maybe like, in Klingon or something haha).

It’s got to play into her decisions, yes. She knows that L Faba and Dandelion have a history, and that L Faba isn’t beyond manipulating him, from what she’s seen. It’s risky territory, and she stands to lose a lot!

Haha I don’t blame you as far as Darrel is concerned!

  4. I intended to read a couple of your chapters this evening. I’ve just binged all 14. Now I’m fat on fiction and need a lie down.

Freaking love this story so much. You’re such a great writer. I can’t wait to see if Cordelia can back at these pesky sages. 😁

    1. Hey lovely, thank you for stopping by 😊 I’m glad you’re enjoying the story in spite of the sages being troublemakers haha! And thank you for the compliments, right back at you 😊

  5. Again, it’s way past my bedtime and I’ve got to keep reading.

-You managed to redeem Darrel by like 15% which is huge.
-Seriously, I was yelling: YOU SHOULD LEAVE HIM EMILIA, HE IS TRASH, but by mid-chapter I was on board.
-What the actual bleep is L. Faba’s problem?
-What the actual bleep is Morgyn’s problem?
    -Dandy, get a clue.
-I’ve changed my mind, Cordelia is precious and must be protected at all costs.

    1. Haha!

      – Darrel is a pretty grey character, but one of his redeeming qualities is that he absolutely worships Emilia
      – He’d probably do whatever she wanted, so she could eben abuse that power if she wasn’t as sweet
      – Sorry, can’t tell you, but she does have reasons for acting the way she does
      – Err… can’t tell you either but you will learn more about what Morgyn might be thinking down the line (there’s even a first person POV Morgyn chapter)
      – Dandy is still oblivious, yes.
      – Aww I’m glad you like Cordie ❤️

  6. okay but how did Emilia and Darrel even end up together? xD They’re like fire and water! But I really love their dynamics.

I wonder what got into Morgyn to demonstrate their skating skills. Was that their attempt at flirting? XD

    1. Haha good question! Probably one of those opposites attract things! I do have headcannon for how they first met, not too sure if there’s ever going to be a suitable spot to squeeze that into the story, though.

Who ever really knows what Morgyn is thinking…

  7. Hey, here’s a riddle. What’s one millimeter long, lost in the couch cushions somewhere, and oh look a bee?

    Dandelion’s attention span!

There are a lot of small but significant interactions in this chapter. Every conversation, even the one Cordelia just got the tail end of, seemed important. Storing them in the back of my mind. I’m guessing Emilia and Darrel’s first meeting also turns out to be plot-relevant.

And man, lampshade-hanging will never not be funny:

Roller-skates appeared on their feet somehow – probably another spell.

    1. Haha yeah, it doesn’t take much to distract Dandelion, even for someone with limited social skills like Cordelia.

Cordelia doesn’t know a great deal so far, so the conversations that might not quite be happening within her earshot might just be the most important. Emilia and Darrel don’t necessarily get a great deal of screentime (though this is not the last you’ve seen of them, of course), but they do represent aspects of the spellcaster world.

You know, I feel like I should have done more magic-related playthroughs before this – it’s so freeing to finally have a vehicle to explain ridiculous gameply mechanics away 😆 I had a legacy story way back and those guys were mostly living in the context of the game mechanics and aware of them, in BC that’s not necessarily the case for a common person, but of course, the story is following characters who’s reality is atypical, so I can have a field day. Woop doop.

        1. Haha, it’s a very long legacy and I wrote it a few years ago without much of a plan, it was definitely a learning curve, to set your expectations. BC definitely has a lot more going on under the surface, and my writing (hopefully) got better since then. I will always have a soft spot for my old legacy though.

          Liked by 1 person

            1. I think watching the evolution of the writer is a cool part about simlit though. I personally am glad that I started CT from the beginning, yes the beginning was different, but your dry sense of humour kept it interesting, and it was a nice gradual introduction to the characters. I sometimes find it hard to find my way around when a story throws a bunch of established characters at you, and I look around all confused, like “who are all these people” 😆

So while Book one may not have covered their nuances, it gave me some idea of them. It may have influenced my impressions of them for better or for worse, but say, with Claudia, for instance, I thought you could get a decent idea of what she’s like and her mental state even in book one).

My style of writing and the tone definitely changed throughout the legacy but I have reread the story a couple years later and still enjoyed it. Just a reflection of a different point in time 😊 But don’t they say that if you don’t think your most recent work is your favourite and highest quality work, you’re doing it wrong? 😊

Also, while not everyone in the legacy got a happy ending, ultimately one of the central themes was about personal growth and becoming more comfortable who you are (well, after the first two generations which were mostly comedy). BC is… not that. Lol. But I’ll let you decide what BC is, in part because I don’t even fully know myself 😆 I better wrap up this tangent, sheesh. Sorry for all the word vomit 😆

              1. Agreed. I love watching people learn and improve! But—as you know—that’s not great for general readers. The first post has to draw people in or they leave immediately. You know what they’re missing, and I know what they’re missing, but they believe they’ve dodged a bullet refusing to read fanfic with such an amateur intro.

Works for creators, though, because we know what’s up.

                1. To be honest I think most people that read simlit these days also write. The first post is always a bit of a lottery as well, completely get your point about it being a deciding factor, but then it’s almost impossible to give people a really clear idea of what they might be in for from the first post alone – I don’t think I’ve read any simlit that did that, though my memory is awful 😄

I do think it’s a clever idea that you did the book one summary to give people two optional starting points, often it’s a bit daunting to delve into an established story in general. Personally I don’t regret reading from the start, though 😊
